If you ever find yourself in Arizona, make time for Sedona—it’s pure magic. And nestled among its famous red rocks is one of the most memorable spots we visited: Slide Rock State Park. We went on a weekday in early September, and the timing couldn’t have been better. The crowds were minimal, the skies were clear, parking was ample and the scenery was absolutely unreal.
Slide Rock is exactly what it sounds like—a natural water slide carved into the slippery red rocks of Oak Creek. The setting feels like something out of another world. Towering canyon walls rise majestically. Vibrant trees line the water. The sound of rushing water echoes through the landscape.
But let’s talk about that water… It was Freezing! Not just “refreshing” or “chilly”—truly, shockingly cold. The kind of cold that makes you question every life decision for a split second before the exhilaration kicks in. Still, once you get used to it (or just accept your fate), the cold becomes part of the experience.
We were warned ahead of time that the rocks are extremely slippery, and they weren’t kidding. Getting down to the water requires a bit of careful maneuvering and balance. My friend Kramer found this out the hard way—he took a little tumble on the way in. Luckily, he was totally fine, and yes, I caught it on video. It’s one of those moments that lives on in group chats and inside jokes forever. (Thanks for taking one for the team, Kramer.)
The beauty of Sedona!

All in all, Slide Rock was a highlight of our trip. It’s beautiful, unique, and just the right mix of relaxing and adventurous. If you’re headed to Sedona, carve out time for this park—you’ll leave with cold toes, sun-warmed skin, and a memory or two you’ll laugh about for years.
