Golden Buddha on the River

Our friend, Vincent was in Bangkok for a few days. We booked a canal tour of Bangkok. The early morning started at the historic Wat Arun on a Thai long-tailed boat and ended with an enormous golden Buddha along with some black dragons.

Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan, commonly known as Wat Arun or the Temple of Dawn, is a historic Buddhist temple on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok and one of Thailand’s most iconic landmarks. The temple dates back to the Ayutthaya period and was later expanded and restored in the early 19th century under Kings Rama II and Rama III. Its most striking feature is the central prang (Khmer-style tower) rising over 70 meters tall, intricately decorated with colorful porcelain and seashells that shimmer in the sunlight, giving the temple its evocative name. (Wikipedia)

Wat Paknam’s Giant Buddha

Wat Paknam’s iconic seated Buddha, officially named Phra Buddha Dhammakāya Thepmongkhon, stands 69 meters (226 feet) tall and 40 meters (130 feet) wide, towering over Bangkok’s Thonburi district. Construction began in 2017 and was completed in 2021 after pandemic delays.

Cast entirely in pure bronze, the statue depicts the Buddha in a meditation posture. (Wikipedia)
